Sewing

Sewing and embroidery skills are in great demand, particularly in the rural areas. Girls and women wish to learn these to be able to at least sew basic clothing for their families. Many girls also wish to learn these skills in anticipation of needing them after marriage as they have families. Yet others wish to learn sewing and embroidery to work as tailor's assistant or in commercial boutiques.

Sewing schools funded by Ashraya are informal schools run within the community during the afternoon when students and housewives tend to be free. The community must donate space for the school; currently sewing schools are operating from the premises of government schools after they close, community centers, panchayat offices, temples, and even in private space provided by a member of the community. Ashraya finances the salary of the teacher.
