Scholarships

Ashraya believes in encouraging and rewarding girls to continue their education with scholarships.  Three types of scholarships are available:

1) For basic education (classes VI - XII) for any child who is unable to afford the school fees, uniform costs or books. Ashraya scholarships vary from Rs. 100-200 per month, depending on the grade and the need. Scholarships for grades 6-10 are paid directly to the school on behalf of the child to cover school fees and other school-related expenditures (e.g. text books, uniforms). Scholarships for grades 11 and 12 are given directly to the girl.

2) For vocation training of 6-12 month duration to girls who have finished class XII. The training must be provided by a recognized institution (public or private) and in fields that are likely to offer employment potential. Currently, most of the demand for training in English language, computer applications, and nursing. Ashraya funding is limited to 85% of the cost of the course, for a maximum of Rs. 10,000.

3) For a few exceptionally bright girls (those obtaining more than 70% marks in Class XII), scholarships are available for degree courses in science, math, and commerce. Scholarship amount is limited to 75% of the cost up to a maximum of Rs. 10,000 per annum. Scholarship is renewable each year with satisfactory student performance.

All of the above-mentioned scholarships are available to girls who are studying, or have completed their basic education, in a government or charitable school. This restriction is designed to ensure that the scholarship aid reaches the most needy girls.

 

 

    Stories of Ashraya scholarship recepients...
    Mamta graduated from Govt. Girls Secondary School, Adarsh Nagar in 2007, receiving 74% marks and 2nd position in the Punjab Board. Her father is a casual day laborer. Ashraya provided her a scholarship to study BSc Economics at the HMV College, Jalandhar. In her first year college exam, she topped the entire university. HMV College is now giving her full financial support.
    Manisha Kohli comes from a family of modest means. She was in the final year of her BA in Computer Administration when her father became seriously ill. The family suddenly had no source of income and she faced the prospect of having to drop out from her studies. An Ashraya scholarship helped her complete her degree. Manisha is now gainfully employed and supporting the education of her younger sister.
